≈ NORTHERN WAVES ≈ ON THE BEACH ≈

Northern Waves ≈ on the beach is a Walk-Listen-Look theatre-in-your-headphones experience while walking on the amazing beaches of Morecambe Bay, created by the community of the West End and beyond.

Pick an audio file, click ‘play’… then walk and observe the town, beach, sea and hills in the distance as you listen to gritty dramas, dark folk tales and eerie songs from the North West, tales of our heritage, ecology, politics.

Produced by the Other National Theatre at the Alhambra, we’ll be adding new sections as we go – including one for younger listeners and an ecology-related section – so keep checking. Also check out the Other National Theatre’s website.

Remember to be safe by the sea and always be aware of the times of the incoming tides.

Goths and Goblins

A mix of modern tales of austerity and old folk tales of Lancashire.

So far, here are three mini-plays (more to come) from the Morecambe Goth Passion Play. Held over Easter at the Alhambra and on the beach (thanks to Jamie, Peter, Anne and Eerke for their support), it’s a dramatic response to the way austerity affects so many people in the North. The series of 14 mini-plays formed a show within a show, representing a sort of Stations of the Cross for our times (warning, a bit stark):

‘Crumb’ – A poignant but comic peek into a poor but loving household, as Mum arrives home one evening with news for the family but no food for the table.
Performed by Bethany Burrows (Daughter), Claire Cozler (Mother), Jordan Kennedy (Son) & Will Nelson (Father).
Written by Nick Awde.
Directed by the team.
Installation at the Alhambra by Invi Brenna.

Duration is 5:37 mins.

‘Rock’ – In this wry look at the effects of Alzheimer’s, an older couple explain how they ended up together after life took them in different directions and why they’ve become a rock for each other.
Performed by Claire Cozler & Ray Wilcockson.
Written by Nick Awde.
Directed by the team.

Installation at the Alhambra by Invi Brenna.
Duration is 4:57 mins.

‘Rent’ – A series of admin miscommunications, funding cuts and letters lost in the post leaves an addict facing eviction from his flat after coming successfully out of rehab.

Written by Nick Awde.
Directed by the team.
Installation at the Alhambra by Invi Brenna.
Duration is 8:41 mins.
